Abstract :
Both hybrid and monolithic integration techniques were investigated under the project. Hybrid integrated transmitters using semiconductor lasers and wideband lithium niobate modulators had been established pre-WORFNET, but the incorporation of gallium arsenide modulators had been untried. A transmitter was designed and built using a low noise DFB laser diode as the optical source which was lens coupled to a wide bandwidth GaAs modulator, the output being a singlemode optical fibre. The assembly of this unit was very successful with an excess coupling loss from the laser to the modulator waveguide of only 3 dB and a modulation bandwidth of >26 GHz
