Abstract :
A subnetwork profile for HF radio data communications (STANAG 5066) is being introduced throughout NATO to provide improved HF communications for broadcast and ARQ applications using an open, interoperable framework. This STANAG incorporates a data rate change (DRC) mechanism to change the data rate of the link within the range 75 to 2400 bps and above. This mechanism may be used to optimise the modem data rate (i.e. the modulation scheme and coding rate) to changes in HF channel conditions to ensure that the maximum throughput is maintained. DERA have been testing a number of data rate change algorithms for use with STANAG 5066 with the aim of providing guidance for implementers of the STANAG. This paper describes some of the considerations to be taken into account when developing a DRC algorithm and describes the results of initial testing of simple algorithms based on the analysis of frame error statistics
