Abstract :
The HIGHWAY project is developing semiconductor technologies to enable 40 Gbit/s TDM upgrades to the installed standard fibre base. Within the framework of this project, field experiments of such a system have been conducted within the BT network. 40 Gbit/s OTDM data has been transmitted over 186.6 km of standard field fibre with chromatic dispersion compensated for by mid-span spectral inversion. Mid-span spectral inversion was achieved in real field conditions by four-wave mixing in an semiconductor optical amplifier
