Abstract :
Quantum effects have been essential in electrical engineering since the invention of the vacuum tube, but now we envision that quantum mechanics, acting at the system level, could enable a new quantum style of data processing. The author reviews the theoretical computer science results that make the desire to implement quantum computation so compelling. A new kind of single-electron device may be capable of achieving quantum-computing operation, and the author describes how it is supposed to work.
