Abstract :
This paper introduces novel direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation techniques for periodic sense positioning systems (e.g., pulse radar systems and wireless local positioning systems). Periodic signaling between a tracker (e.g., dynamic base station) and a target (e.g., transceiver) in these systems introduces a nature of cyclostationarity to the received signal at the receiver of the tracker. The cyclostationary nature of the received signal is analyzed theoretically and via simulations in terms of system parameters such as number of targets, average speed of targets, bandwidth, coverage range and HPBW (half power beam width) of the tracker antenna array. Exploiting the introduced cyclostationarity property, novel DOA estimation schemes are proposed to improve DOA estimation performance of the tracker. The performance measure is the DOA estimation mean square error (MSE). Simulations are conducted to study the performance in terms of signal to noise ratio and number of targets. The results confirm the superiority of the proposed approaches.
