Abstract
VHF radar data acquired by the Airborne Imaging Radar CARABAS in May 1998 over the Landes forest and the Lozere forest were analysed. The relations between pine forest parameters (such as age and basal area) and backscattering coefficients σohh are presented. A dynamic range of 15 dB has been observed for stand age in the range of 0-100 years. A theoretical model was used to determine the major backscattering mechanisms, and simple relation between backscattering and basal area is derived
