Abstract :
This Paper reviews the growing importance of achieving Electromagnetic Compatibility, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the subject within the sphere of today´s modern telecommunications systems. It provides the telecoms power engineer who is not himself an EMC specialist with an appraisal of EMC requirements as they concern him and others, both now and in the future. It will show the work that he can and must do himself and indicate where specialist help is likely to be required. In view of the many and varied existing interference requirements and the omission of telecommunications equipment coverage from most of them, a fresh approach is required, with the particular needs of the telecoms situation in mind. Emissions of interference are discussed and basic equipment requirements identified. Attention is also given to susceptibility, where again the basic requirements are identified. Finally, the Paper looks at the situation as it is seen to be developing and indicates possible lines of future development.
