Abstract :
Accumulator batteries designed for brief, high-rate discharges down to a given cut-off voltage are largely intended to serve the purposes of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and are assessed for battery performance through characteristic curves or tables. These the battery manufacturers provide. It will be shown how to convert these data into a linear, easily grasped, relationship connecting the nominal discharge capacity with the flow rate and duration of battery current. The parameters characterizing such a linear discharge graph for each given battery are derived from its characteristic curves; or else, are verified by subjecting it to two discharge sequences. Working examples are adduced to elucidate salient points, and so facilitate solving any problem arising in UPS battery operation.
