Abstract :
In this paper, we address the energy/delay tradeoff in data transmission over a time varying wireless link. To this end, we propose power and rate control techniques to minimize energy/delay needed to deliver each packet reliably. Two problems are considered: In the first problem, we minimize the expected energy spent to successfully deliver each packet subject to a delay constraint. In the second problem, we minimize the expected time spent to successfully deliver each packet given a certain energy budget. Channel State Information (CSI) is assumed to be available at the transmitter and Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) is used to transmit each packet reliably. Each problem is formulated as a Constrained Markov Decision Problem (CMDP) and a Linear Programming approach is proposed to solve it.
