Abstract :
The paper outlines the purpose of signalling, its fundamental objectives, how these have been developed and delivered over time, including a view of future changes. The paper aims to do this from the viewpoint of interaction with electrification and plant engineering and thus closes with a summary of the principal areas of interaction.
