Abstract :
Considering the variation and intermittence caused by the high penetration of wind power, more additional operational reserves are required to keep the balance of power energy. With the development of wind prediction technology, more accurate operational reserves can be calculated among different time scales, from microseconds to days. Several methodologies for computing operational reserves are summarized and their applicable scopes are discussed in this paper. Demand response (DR) technology can adjust the relationship between supply and demand, which can be regarded as a special method to provide extraneous reserves. A framework of agent-based demand response is proposed, and furthermore, the large penetration of PHEVs/EVs has been taken as one DR method to provide operational reserves to the system when necessary. The preliminary analysis shows the significant potential of DR to meet additional reserve requirements caused by the penetration of wind power.
