  • Abstract
    Since the move of the telecommunications industry into the computer age, the designers of new switching systems have been involved in the same efforts as computer manufacturers to miniaturize electronic components and at the same time expand upon the capabilities of such components. The trend towards smaller and more complex switching equipment has however resulted in a consolidation of electrical loads and a subsequent rise in equipment heat dissipation, along with an increase in equipment investment and the disruption to service that would result from a loss of equipment due to fire or other such calamity.
