Abstract
This paper discusses the characteristics of modern solid state switches for automatic transfer applications and points out the advantages and limitations of their use. Typical communications/computer applications are described where the properties are an advantage compared with traditional electromechanical devices. Concerns such as safety, reliability, surge withstand capability and fault protection are discussed. The use of various power switching configurations is shown and a prediction of the future trends in static switching is given.
