Abstract
The problem of sharing resources in telecommunications networks has benefited from a rich theoretical development in the area of statistical multiplexing. Integrating data and other very bursty traffic on these networks changes the way of managing the concurrent access to network resources. Discrete event simulation is used in the paper for the quantitative analysis of the trade-off involved in giving up the “advance-resource reservation” approach used in traditional networks. To that end, modeling assumptions are presented, which allow to compare the different approaches with respect to throughput, overhead, delays, and utilization
