The paper looks at the railway safety engineering aspects. The author suggests that systems safety analysis is not always highly accurate, and consequently its impact on decision routes needs to be considered with care. Clearly wrong decisions do not provide value for money. Overall he believes that safety studies and analysis provide a useful technique and when applied suitably, they can produce effective reductions in risk and in project and operational costs
