            Abstract :
A versatile, multi-machine workcentre capable of processing a range of parts is the basic manufacturing unit in an automated manufacturing system. The workcentres operate with finite buffers and multiple machines. This paper develops multi-server polling models for these systems. Since exact queueing analysis of this class of polling systems is known to be exceedingly difficult, the performance analysis is carried out using generalised stochastic Petri net (GSPN) models. The modelling issues are identified, and a hierarchical GSPN model is developed. The GSPN model can encompass a variety of system features, such as various server scheduling rules and queue service policies
