  • Abstract
This work presents a moving office service which allows roaming users to access their remote private LAN even as they are driving quickly. In this paper, the authors address this kind of service in the MM-MAN (mobile multimedia metropolitan area network) which is an IP-based microcellular network deployed along the main roads in the metropolitan area. A lightweight virtual private network (VPN) scheme is proposed for protecting the packet transmission from various attacks especially in the wireless network. Compared with the heavy burden and complexity of IP security, a low layer tunnel and hiding of IP address as two primary means can provide the secure remote access with lightweight cost on the mobile devices and wireless link. The proposed security scheme can be employed as an alternative choice to the present mobile VPN services.
