Abstract :
Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology has been one of the most innovative topics in wireless communications in recent years, and is currently receiving a great deal of global attention. The design of an ultra-wideband antenna is a challenging task. This paper gives a brief overview of the concept and the basic characteristics of the microstrip antenna, then analyzes ways to broaden its bandwidth. Based on the discussion, This work presents a novel ultra-wideband microstrip quasi-horn antenna using stepped dielectric substrate. Simulation results clearly show that the frequency range obtained for VSWR<2 is much wider, gain from 6 dBi at 2.8 GHz to 14.6 dBi at 13 GHz and good radiation patterns. The performance trend indicates a much higher operating frequency and with the frequency increase, the antenna gain becomes bigger. Potential research and applications are suggested.
