  • Abstract
This paper examines and analyzes the data communication protocols and procedures that are used for character oriented messages on long delay links, such as are encountered on satellite transmission paths. The primary emphasis will be on the application of these techniques for tactical communications, and in particular as they apply to new tactical digital systems. The types of protocols used and the significance of a long delay will be described in terms of performance. DoD data transmission MODES I and IV will be analyzed, transmission efficiency performance derived and comparisons of different techniques presented to define a preferred approach. Results from calculations and simulations will be presented. In concluding, potential enhancements and trade-offs will be outlined for optimizing link usage efficiency, thereby introducing the following paper on bit oriented protocols.
