A sub-multiplex function for providing the mobile multimedia service

The interest in mobile communication is extending from voice services to various mobile data services. The IS-95, IS-95A, IS-95B specifications of TIA/EIA provide a multimedia service by a multiplex layer. However, the present specifications just supports the multimedia service with a multiconnection by multicalls, and cannot support the service with a multiconnection by a single call. Thus, in order to provide the multimedia service with a multiconnection by a single call, that may be demanded later, there is inconvenience that must add special protocols for each multimedia service. This paper proposes a sub-multiplex layer that supports the multimedia service by a single call requiring a multiconnection. This sub-multiplex layer is activated by the indication of an application program and at this time an existing multiplex option is maintained. The sub-multiplex layer multiplexes voice and mobile data, and the upper multiple layer. Thus the voice and the mobile data are transmitted through a single voice path which was already set up. This function can provide the mobile multimedia service by a single call, and is compatible with the existing network model
