Abstract
The various types of excitation systems, as well as the solid state equipment used to complement the brush and brushless excited synchronous generators, are described. Features of the excitation system are discussed as they apply to machines connected to an isolated bus and machines which are connected to the electric utility. The criteria of excitation systems, classifications of generators, requirements for short circuit support, and features common to excitation systems are presented
