K-12 initiatives: increasing the pool

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) is fortunate to have the Imperial Oil Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Outreach Program. The main goal of STEM Outreach is to develop programs and initiatives that will encourage children to continue their studies in mathematics and science and to consider careers in engineering, science and technology. Young children begin to develop long-standing impressions of science and mathematics subjects very early on. As they grow up, these impressions become difficult to change and it is at the high school level that students choose optional courses that may significantly affect their career choices and options. The activities developed and managed through STEM Outreach are designed to positively affect the experience of children with science and mathematics and to inspire students to continue their studies in these areas. This paper will discuss the activities and structure of the STEM Outreach Program at UNB.
