  • Abstract
    This paper presents a formal probabilistic definition for the resolution capability of a general class of MUSIC-like direction estimators. An estimator in this class has its structure based on a one-dimensional search of the minima of an optimizing functional, usually termed the estimator null-spectrum. Following a rigorous definition of probability of resolution, various levels of approximation in the statistics employed are used to obtain computable expressions for resolution probabilities of two closely-spaced sources. These approximations are related to previously proposed definitions for resolution probability and in this manner clarify the conditions under which these ad-hoc definitions hold true
