Abstract :
The Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) Joint-Service Waveform will be used as the primary means of tactical line-of-sight digital communication among U.S. and allied operational forces during the 1990 through 2010 time frame. JTIDS networks will allow jam resistant information exchange between network subscribers. The author believes that the operational effectiveness and hence the success and useful life of JTIDS can be directly tied to how efficiently the available communication time slots, stacked nets, and message relays are planned for and managed during network operation. This article provides an overview of JTIDS and identifies potential areas for significant improvement in the current approaches to JTIDS net management. The author provides a recommended approach to managing the JTIDS network.
