Abstract :
Photonic crystal structures using the photonic bandgap effect for horizontal confinement offer possibilities to engineer integrated optical circuits with a packing density approaching that of integrated electronics. However, both the design and fabrication processes are significantly more demanding than for conventional integrated optical circuits. The emphasis of the short-course will be on design and fabrication of simple passive components. Various design methods will be presented with emphasis on engineering of components with a large bandwidth of operation. In addition, fabrication and loss mechanisms in crystal waveguides will be discussed
