Abstract :
A zero-crossing-based time-domain receiver in an underwater acoustic modem is presented for application in the vertical sound channel. The purpose of the system is to allow transmission of data at 2400 baud between two modems that may be moving relative to one another. Zero-crossing techniques can provide cost effective solutions to high data rate telemetry in the ocean environment. A comparison of the matched-filter receiver to a zero-crossing receiver is given for an ideal and a noisy environment. Results from computer simulations, laboratory breadboard tests, and an at-sea experiment are presented
