Abstract :
The paper will describe the development of the HAZMAP remote measurement unit which is designed to support inspection and robotic simulation tasks in hostile, principally radioactive, environment. The system is being developed under the European Community Teleman programme with the support of major European Nuclear organisations and is currently being tested by these agencies prior to deployment within radioactive areas. A description of the system will be given together with the results of trials which demonstrate that remote measurement with a precision of ±2 mm-3 mm is readily achievable. The strategy for construction of accurate 3D CAD representations will also be described together with the role of such models in subsequent teleoperations
