Abstract
As the complexity of telecommunications networks increases centralised control becomes less attractive, tending to increase response times to network events, reduce overall resilience and encourage a top level approach to development of network management applications. This results in a massive build up of software complexity. We discuss how distributed network restoration using embedded algorithms can help overcome some of these problems for both SDH and SDH/ATM multi-layer networks
