Abstract :
The author discusses a methodology for evaluating the performance of I/O configurations. The theoretical performance of disk drives, disk strings, and I/O subsystems is calculated. Using these formulas, it is shown that the disk performance is reaching its physical limitation. However, disk cache buffers and parallel I/O processing provide an effective storage hierarchy by which the performance of I/O subsystems can be significantly increased.<>
