Abstract :
A virtual environment is defined. The rationale for the use of virtual environments in scientific visualization is then examined, and the role of virtual environments in scientific visualization is discussed. It is noted that virtual environments are extremely well suited for the exploration of phenomena. One generic example is the investigation of complex high-dimensional databases, for example a three-dimensional unsteady velocity vector field.<>
