Abstract
A number of SONET-based survivable interoffice network architectures were studied. One purpose of the study was to assist network planners in their selection process by assessing the relative benefits and costs of alternative network architectures. Another purpose was to guide future work on requirements for improving survivability benefits in SONET-based networks. The network alternatives were studied from the standpoint of cost, survivability and risk analysis, operations impact, and survivability economics. The results of these studies are summarized
