Abstract
Measurements of mean current have been made by instruments moored within three metres of the surface in continental shelf seas. The paper outlines briefly some of the methods being adopted in order to ascertain the accuracy of the data and the viability of the technique. A method involving comparison with the rate of displacement of Lagrangian drifters - and some present limitations - is described in greater detail.
