Abstract
Pacific Bell´s Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS) technology test conducted in 1991 and early 1992 is described. The test was divided into four areas: a Pacific Bell laboratory test, a Stanford University trial, a commercial customer technology test, and a Pacific Bell internal beta trial. The testbed consisted of four SMDS switches, DS1 and DS3 trunks between the switches, and 21 end-user SMDS DS1 access links in more than 25 different sites. The test results were extremely favorable. The SMDS features are: high-speed access; cost sharing public packet switched network; inter-enterprise data communications; standard customer premises equipment (CPE) interfaces for network access; security enforced by address screening and validation; logical private network (closed user group) implementation within the public network; and minimization of user network administration and maintenance
