Abstract :
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are jointly developing the next-generation series of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), known as the GOES-R Series. The GOES-R Ground Segment (GS) will be developed and delivered to NOAA as an integrated system comprised of satellite command and control, product generation and distribution, and comprehensive enterprise management capabilities. In addition, a new GOES backup facility known as the Remote Backup (RBU) is being developed to support GOES-R failover scenarios and continuity of operations (COOP) activities. Since NOAA GOES ground systems have traditionally been developed as separate pieces by multiple organizations, this new paradigm will result in new operational concepts for NOAA´s Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO).
