Abstract :
An algorithm which approximates the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for the locations of constant-density discs in integral projection data is presented. The algorithm is of linear complexity in the object count and requires only approximately 25% more computation than the MLE of the single-location problem. Approximation error analysis, in terms of error probability, is provided through empirical matching of densities for the extremal values of the random-noise field
