Abstract :
The place of the engineer in society is being traced through history. The role varies from revered colleague to humble slave. Reasons are being sought for these differences, how far they arise from within societies, or perhaps depend on the character of the engineer. Lessons should be learnt for today, particularly in relation to ethics.
