Abstract :
Summary form only given.Ultrashort (femtosecond) pulse propagation in optical fibers is of interest given the potential for the next generation telecommunication applications. The physics of pulse propagation, however, is still elusive, especially on femtosecond time scales, and the understanding of the interplay of dispersive and nonlinear effects on ultrashort pulse propagation in single-mode optical fibers is crucial for the development of next generation of communication networks. In the present work we report the observation of several nonlinear effects which resulting from ultrashort pulse propagation in optical fibers. We verify, through observation of the phase, the stable propagation of a soliton over the entire length of the link, and perform characterization of the energy dependence of soliton duration. Furthermore, a sizeable soliton self-frequency shift is observed and analyzed.
