Abstract :
Internet protocol (IP) networks are gaining popularity in network-based control applications because IP is a common denominator protocol in non-proprietary networks and because of mass production of devices that support IP. Even though IP being a best effort protocol was originally not designed for demand of this kind of application. However, recent advancements in bandwidth and reliability allow successful attempts of IP-based control. This paper examines the relationship between the media type, network architecture, protocol type and the packet round trip time for various case studies.
