Summary form only given.We have demonstrated a 90-fs, diode-pumped Yb:GdCOB laser of 40 mW average output power. The Yb:GdCOB crystal combines the capability of supporting ultrashort pulses in the sub-190-fs domain with an emission cross-section and a thermal conductivity significantly higher than for Yb-doped glasses. Therefore, it has a great potential for both, high peak power as well as high average power ultrafast laser sources.
