Women in engineering: planning and persistence pay off

An overview of the University of Dayton´s Women in Engineering (WIE) program is presented, and factors that have helped to make the WIE program successful are pointed out. The program is described, a major 15-year study of this program is reported. The conclusions that are drawn from the data in the 15-year study are that the WIE program is effective in encouraging enrollment of women in engineering studies; that persistence of effort and continuity of staffing pay off handsomely in program success; and that the program, combined with a supportive atmosphere in the students´ home and school lives, exerts a strong positive influence on their choice of engineering or science as a career
