Abstract :
The authors propose the use of continuous simulation analysis/design techniques of nonlinear control systems with feedback in a control course for undergraduate-level programs. Three frequently encountered nonlinear cases were selected to be analyzed: dead zone, amplifier saturation with dead zone, and dead zone with hysteresis. These nonlinear functions as a whole represent a large number of the familiar characteristics found in typical nonlinear systems. The behavior of each system is analyzed in detail with implied changes in an array of control variables. This experimental method provides the discovery and documentation of generalities within the function and in contrast to other systems. A data catalog is generated for each case which contains output documentation on the systems behavior to an array of variable values related to the plant, the nonlinear function in question, and the input function applied. This accumulated data provide an understanding of the nonlinear system in question, which leads to an increase in the control and efficiency of all physical systems
