Abstract :
We outline the fundamentals of an acoustic mode method, suitable to describe scattering and mode conversion phenomena arising in configurations with abrupt or gradual transitions in several spatial directions. The method is applied to three specific problems. First, the validity of a liquid-wedge for the generation of a Stoneley wave (also called Scholte-Stoneley wave) at a liquid-solid interface is discussed. Secondly, the scattering and mode conversion of a Stoneley wave at the extremity of a fluid loaded plate is analysed. Finally, the excitation of a Stoneley wave by means of the conversion of a bulk wave incident at the edge of a fluid loaded plate is considered
