Summary form only given.The case of weak, symmetric dispersion management has so far been restricted to theoretical and numerical simulation work. Here, for the first time to our knowledge, we investigate experimentally the use of such a map consisting of positive and negative sections of non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF) for transoceanic 10-Gbit/s dispersion-managed soliton transmission. We show that with the correct choice of average dispersion it is possible to transmit a 2/sup 31/-1 PRBS data stream over 13,400 km error free. Experimental transmission results are shown for a range of average dispersion values and the results are compared with those of a dispersion compensated standard fibre (SF/DCF) map. Based on these results the applicability of both maps to transoceanic WDM systems is discussed.
