Abstract :
A distributed switching architecture based on the ATM technique has been investigated. The authors describe the arrangement of call-processing functions and intermodule communication strategies for a distributed switching architecture in B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network). They consider the adaptability of two classical control methods (centralized control and distributed control) in the B-ISDN environment and indicate that it is not rational to apply a single control method to handling multimedia calls. They propose two strategies which change the routing control method according to the required throughput of a call; i.e. hybrid and broadcast distributed control methods. These strategies can provide efficient routing functions for both narrowband and wideband calls. The choice of these two strategies has to be decided on the basis of the switching system requirements
