Abstract
Within the ETSI SMG, a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is being specified as part of GSM Phase 2+. The GPRS will be based on a new type of logical radio channel optimized for packet data. The requirement for higher data rate, flexibility and efficient utilization of the scarce bandwidth across the air interface triggered the development of a multi-slot packet data channel concept, which is presented. Such a concept can be implemented on any TDMA system and even extended to a multi-carrier solution. The article describes the principles for dynamic bandwidth allocation based on multi-slot operation at the MAC layer in a master-slave channel concept. Further, an evaluation, through simulations, is done in order to compare the performance of multi-slot and earlier assumed single-slot MAC layer operation
