Abstract :
Summary form only given. Common methods for the generation of far-infrared or terahertz (THz) radiation based on high-energy fs laser pulses include the use of either unbiased or biased semiconductors or nonlinear crystals. Also, THz emission from unbiased helium gas has been reported. Here we present the first demonstration of the generation of THz radiation by photo-ionization of electrically biased air with high-energy fs-laser pulses.
