Abstract :
The Buneman-Hartree (B-H) condition is reexamined in a cylindrical relativistic magnetron using both the conventional single particle model, and the Brillouin flow model. These two models yield the same result for the Buneman-Hartree condition only in the limit of a planar magnetron. In general, the B-H condition according to the Brillouin flow model allows a wider range of operating conditions, consistent with the data obtained from the experiments on the UM/L-3 relativistic magnetron.
