Abstract :
Single-sideband (SSB) is an efficient modulation scheme but suffers from frequency difference errors between the transmitter and receiver. To provide a frequency reference a low level pilot, typically -10 dB below the peak envelope power (PEP), is transmitted with the speech signal. The authors describe an automatic frequency control (AFC) system for stationary and mobile single-sideband suppressed carrier (SSB-SC) communications, operating in the 30-400 MHz frequency range. The AFC system forms part of a multirate SSB demodulator architecture and is a combination of an infinite impulse response-adaptive line enhancer (IIR-ALE) and a digital phase locked-loop (DPLL)
