Abstract
The paper proposes the development of ±50kvar distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM). The DSTATCOM is based on a conventional bi-directional voltage source converter (VSC) topology using insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT). The hardware design and control algorithm are discussed in details. In order to improve the DSTATCOM dynamic performance and reduce harmonics, the pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique with direct current control is used to control the converter output current. Experimental results for both lagging and leading reactive power compensation, along with transient changes between them, prove the good static and dynamic performance.
