Abstract :
The advent of high current density cathodes allows electron guns with low or zero compression beams. With little or no compression, it is easier to achieve high beam quality with reduced dependence on focusing structures. This is of particular interest for mm-wave tubes, where beam quality is critical and very tight tolerances are difficult to achieve.
